Explore the slave house but also relax in the tropical garden space in the back. A place where enslaved people relaxed, gardened and enjoyed life as best they could.
Where is The Museum and Slave Quarters located and is it Free?
We are located in the historic district of Charlotte Amalie, aka Old Town St. Thomas. Our street, Wimmelskafts Gade (the Danish name), is known locally as “Back Street”.
Yes, the museum and gardens are free to visit. Heck, you might even get a free sip of rum to try…or some hot sauce! But please feel free to stop by, explore and relax here at our museum and tropical gardens.
How do we get to the Museum?
You can take a taxi and have them drop you anywhere in town. If you are walking up to 13W we are one street inland from Main Street. Right around the corner from Virgilio’s. Don’t be surprised if we are hard to find…we like it that way.
Is parking available at 13W?
Only off-site parking is available. There is a public parking lot that’s a 5-6-minute walk away at Fort Christian. The vast majority of our groups rely on taxis for transportation to and from the event. The taxi drop off/pick up is right at our front doorstep.
Are there any hotels nearby for out-of-town guests?
Yes, there are several options. Our favorite spot in town is The Pink Palm Hotel. A more economical option is The Windward Passage. Both are within a 4-5 minute walk away. 5 minutes away by car is The Hampton by Hilton and less than 10 minutes away by car are The Westin/Buoy House and Emerald Beach Hotel. But the nice thing about our small island is that all the resorts on island are within about 20 minutes from Charlotte Amalie.
