The Slave House Museum & Gardens in Charlotte Amalie
Visit the Only Slave House in St. Thomas – Free Admission
13 Wimmelskafts (“13W”) is a free museum and historic landmark located in Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas. It’s also the only slave house in St. Thomas still in existence! It is a must visit site when visiting Old Town.
The Slave House and Museum is located at 13 Wimmelskafts in Old Town (Charlotte Amalie). The historic building was previously part of a large estate that included one of the largest homes in St. Thomas. Today 13W is cut off from the estate home by “Wimmelskafts Gade” or known by locals as “Back Street”.
Today the building is a hub of activity and produces many local products including rum, hot sauces and coffee. Enjoy the sites and sounds and the history and sit in the lush tropical shade of the garden oasis behind 13 W.
The museum is one street over from Main Street and just a 5 minute walk from Fort Christian. So whether you are staying on island or coming off a cruise ship, we are just a short walk from the taxi and parking areas.
When you are ready to move beyond the crowds and jewelry stores, come find us!
Local Products Manufactured at 13 Wimmelskafts
Rum
One of the most iconic products created in the Caribbean. And 3 Queens Distillery is the oldest continually running distillery in St. Thomas. Come visit the craft distillery and try a rum tasting or just watch the folks distilling sugar cane into rum.
Hot Sauce
The world’s first Scotch Bonnett Pepper Sriracha. And possibly as good as the original. We grow most of the peppers right here on St. Thomas that go into our hot sauce. The sauce is made and bottled right at the museum.
Coffee
Coffee made the most Caribbean way possible. Aged in rum barrels and roasted here at the museum. You can buy whole beans or ground beans. The smell of rum barrels and coffee are in the air. Watch the process and leave with a bag of fresh, roasted beans.
Private Tours
We have partnered with Blue Mango Tours for unforgettable walking tours in St. Thomas that include a tour of the slave house and a deeper dive into the museum’s collection.
