Welcome to 13Wimmelskafts
About Us
The only slave house in St. Thomas and one of the most historic structures in the Virgin Islands..
The slave quarters are located at 13 Wimmelskafts in downtown Charlotte Amalie. The building was previously part of a larger estate that included one of the largest homes in St. Thomas. Today 13 Wimmelskafts is cut off from the estate home by “Wimmelskafts Gade” or known by locals as “Back Street”.
Wimmelskafts Gade is one street over from Main Street and just a 5 minute walk from Fort Christian. The building has been beautifully restored and is open for visitors.
Today the building is a hub of activity and produces many local products including rum, Caribbean rum truffles, hot sauces and coffee. Several different business occupy the space and just about every worker there can share the history of the building’s former use to house enslaved Africans.
